Spain Claim Second World Cup Title After Extra-Time Thriller Against Argentina

Spain are world champions once again. La Roja beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, closing out the biggest edition of the tournament in history with a nervy, defence-first battle that came down to a single moment of magic deep into extra time.

Ninety minutes weren’t enough to separate these two football giants. Spain dominated possession throughout and finished the match with a huge shot advantage over Argentina, but Emiliano Martinez stood tall in the Argentina goal, and the reigning champions’ backline held firm behind Rodri, who spent the afternoon shutting down space around Lionel Messi.
Argentina played the final stretch of the match a man short after Enzo Fernandez picked up a second yellow card in stoppage time, and that extra space finally told. In the opening minutes of the second period of extra time, substitute Ferran Torres pounced on a loose ball inside the box and buried it left-footed under the crossbar, sending the Spanish bench into delirium.
It was Torres’ first goal of the tournament, and only the second time in World Cup history that a substitute has scored the winning goal in a final.
Argentina had one final chance to answer. A foul on the edge of the box gave 19-year-old Lamine Yamal a free kick from around 22 yards, but Martinez got down well to push it wide, finishing the match with 12 saves, the most by any goalkeeper in a World Cup final.
What It Means
This is Spain’s second World Cup title, adding to their 2010 triumph, and it makes them the first nation to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup at the same time. Argentina, chasing back-to-back titles after their 2022 win on penalties, fell just short. No team has repeated as champions since Brazil won in 1958 and 1962.
For Messi, this was widely expected to be his final World Cup appearance. He’ll turn 43 by the time the next tournament rolls around in 2030, though he’s left the door open to featuring at the Copa America in 2028.
