The Kawhi Leonard-Raptors Trade Is on Hold: Here’s Why
One of the biggest trades of the NBA offseason still hasn’t gone through, and it might not for a while. Back in June, the Toronto Raptors agreed to a deal to bring Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto, sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two future first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks to the LA Clippers in return. Nearly two months later, the trade is still sitting in limbo.
Why the Trade Is Stuck
The holdup centres on an ongoing NBA investigation into Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and an alleged scheme to get around the salary cap. According to reporting from Pablo Torre, Leonard signed an endorsement deal in 2022 with a company called Aspiration through his LLC, and a former Aspiration employee has claimed the arrangement was actually a way to funnel extra money to Leonard outside his contract.
Both sides reportedly still intend to complete the trade eventually, but Toronto decided to pause it until the investigation is resolved. As one insider covering the team put it, the only real threat to the deal at this point would be Leonard’s current contract getting voided altogether.
The League Says It Isn’t the One Holding Things Up
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the standoff directly, making clear the league itself didn’t freeze the trade. He said the decision to pause was made by the two teams themselves, given the uncertainty around what the investigation could mean for Leonard’s contract. This puts the pressure back on the Raptors and Clippers to decide how much risk they’re willing to absorb rather than waiting on the league to clear things up for them.
Doubt Is Starting to Creep In
Public confidence in the deal getting finished has started to wobble. Clippers forward Dillon Brooks was recently asked directly whether the trade was happening and replied that it wasn’t, a comment that spread quickly given how unresolved the situation remains. Separately, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne raised the possibility that Leonard could simply stay put in LA if the deal collapses, and suggested the Clippers wouldn’t be devastated by that outcome.
With training camps opening in under two months and the regular season not far behind, time is becoming as big a factor as the investigation itself. The longer this drags on without certainty about Leonard’s availability, the harder it becomes for Toronto to justify the price it agreed to pay in June.
What It Means for the Raptors
Toronto is coming off a seven-game first-round exit against Cleveland, and this trade was clearly meant as a win-now move. Leonard, who turned 35 and dealt with a long injury history in recent years, still profiles as a difference-maker when healthy, but the Raptors are giving up significant draft capital for a short window of contention. If the investigation drags into the season or results in real consequences for Leonard’s contract, Toronto’s front office will have to decide fast whether the gamble is still worth making.
For now, Leonard remains a Clipper, the Raptors remain in wait-and-see mode, and the rest of the league is watching to see how it all shakes out.
